Who is Nate Sedgwick?



I have lived in China for 12 years and speak fluent Mandarin (Chinese). I worked for a Chinese manufacturer at their production site in Xiamen, China for 8 years. I successfully invested in and continue to be a shareholder in other Chinese companies. I am married to my beautiful Chinese wife, Renee and have two children together. We currently own and operate the SOURCINGmojo headquarters in Xiamen, China


I’m a family guy in my early thirties and I learned about sourcing and supply chain management in Asia because I had to.

In graduate school for International & Comparative Politics, I chose to study abroad for 2 years in Dalian and Shanghai, China. At the conclusion of my second trip, I was hired by a Shanghai private equity firm to assist our invested companies with developing their international sales. At one of these companies, I worked closely with and eventually fell in love with a beautiful and intelligent woman that is now my wife. Shortly thereafter, I joined her family’s manufacturing company as a salesperson and worked my way up to Chief Marketing Officer, helping grow annual sales from $13 million to $50 million in 5 years. Through my experience working for a Chinese firm, I realized and witnessed that most foreign companies significantly struggled or just didn’t know how to source effectively. I saw the opportunity to help and started a company built to make a difference.

How SOURCINGmojo Began


Working for a Chinese manufacturer for 8 years, I sat on the Chinese side of the table meeting and negotiating with executives of foreign companies. It was startling to witness how nearly 95% of the companies we dealt with had very little understanding what they were doing. Most were very poor at negotiating pricing and payment terms, product and quality standards, tooling and supplier agreements, and everything else.

I felt sincere disappointment to see how poorly Western companies performed in this environment. It was clear to me that they faced two main problems. First, they did not understand Chinese culture or Asian culture in general. Flying to Asia 1-2 weeks per year and shaking hands with suppliers isn’t going to change that. Secondly, their sourcing operations and processes were either lacking or absent altogether. They lacked the professional experience of building, implementing and running a robust supply chain system.
